Hello, and welcome to the Reading Counsellors website.
Before we introduce ourselves, we'd like to say just how sorry we are that you've felt the need to look for counselling. In our experience, people who turn to counselling and psychotherapy tend to be at a point in their lives where, frankly, everything is just too much. They give everything of themselves to the world and yet the world seems to give very little back, their emotions can become overwhelming over the most minor of issues, and they simply can't take it anymore. They've tried everything else they can think of, but nothing seems to work and now they've given up. They're tired.
If any of this sounds like you, please rest assured that you're not alone. Statistics show that more and more people are struggling with some form of mental health difficulty, and each one of them feels just as isolated and alone as you now feel. But it doesn't have to go on.
We're sorry you're struggling, and we'd like to help.
Reading Counsellors is a community interest company whose aim is to improve our town's mental health, one client at a time. We work from a number of locations in and around Reading, and we try to be as accessible as possible in terms of both travel and cost.
Counselling usually comes in two forms: free, but short-term, and only if the client fits a certain demographic (e.g., age or circumstances); or prohibitively expensive. Alas, the vast majority of would-be clients fall between these two services, and so are unable to access any form of help. This doesn't strike us as fair, and so we formed Reading Counsellors to meet these people's needs.
As counsellors, our role is to support you as you explore difficult emotions and situations, and to help you understand why you feel, think and behave the way you do. We don't give advice; there's no telling you what to do or how to live your life. Instead, we try to help you reach your own conclusions, your own decisions, and in so doing help you have control of your own existence. This can often mean making changes in life, and we will aid you in making those changes.
All our counsellors are experienced professionals who offer safe, nonjudgmental environments in which you can learn to be who you truly are.
Somehow, 'life' has a way of getting to all of us, and this can happen regardless of an individual's wealth, family circumstances, upbringing, race, gender, sexual identity or football team. It's very easy to tell yourself that you 'shouldn't' feel a certain way because others have it harder; or that there's no point seeing a counsellor because they just won't 'get' your culture or identity.
Hold those thoughts...
There's no such thing as a 'normal' person. Your issues are as unique and individual as you are, and are just as valid and important as anyone else's.
Mental health difficulties come in a multitude of forms, ranging from simple to complex, from barely noticeable to utterly debilitating. What they all have in common is that the people who suffer from them often find them difficult to deal with. If this is the case for you, no matter what your troubles might be, please give yourself permission to be taken seriously.
Our job, as professional therapeutic counsellors, is to be there for you on every step of your journey--and we will do that regardless of who you are or why you have come to us. We do not discriminate against our clients on any issue; and we will always treat you with respect and compassion, no matter what troubles you choose to bring. We are here for you, and will value your identity, your uniqueness, your dignity. And we will always take you seriously.
That's our promise.
